Boss Laser LS1420 Review: Why I Bought a Used One (and You Should Too)
A used Boss Laser LS1420 is a solid buy—if you know what you’re looking at. I've coordinated over 200 rush orders in the last three years, and in March 2024, I had to source a CO2 laser cutter for a client with a 48-hour turnaround. Buying new wasn’t an option. Here’s what I learned.
The Short Answer: It’s Worth It
For small-to-medium shops, the LS1420 offers a balance of cutting area, power, and reliability that's hard to beat at the used price point. I've seen these machines run for five-plus years with only basic maintenance. But—and this is important—you need to check for three things before you hand over cash.
1. The Bed and Rails
This is where most wear shows up. I once inspected a unit that looked pristine on the outside but had a warped honeycomb bed and pitted guide rails. The owner said it was 'barely used.' The rails told a different story. A new set of rails runs about $200, plus four hours of labor. That's a $600 hidden cost most people miss.

2. The Tube and Power Supply
The LS1420 originally shipped with a RECI W4 tube—rated for about 2,000 hours of use. If the seller can’t tell you the number of hours on the tube, be suspicious. A replacement tube costs $350-500. The power supply is less critical, but I’ve seen failing drivers cause inconsistent cuts. A new one is around $250.
3. The Controller Software
Boss Laser uses a proprietary controller (usually Ruida-based). I went back and forth for a week between the LS1420 and an LS-1630 because I wasn’t sure the software could handle my client’s files. It can, but only if it’s updated. I paid $80 extra for a firmware update that saved a $12,000 project.
Why Used? The Efficiency Argument
Switching to used equipment cut our average project turnaround from five days to two. Here's why: buying used eliminated the lead time for manufacturing and shipping. Instead of waiting six to eight weeks, we went from search to delivery in about one week.
I’m not saying all used equipment is okay for emergency orders. I'm saying the LS1420’s reliability record makes it a better bet than most. The Gut vs. Data Moment
Every cost analysis pointed to buying new. The numbers said new gives you lower risk of downtime, warranty coverage, and full support. But something felt off. I went with my gut—bought a used unit from a seller who couldn’t guarantee the rails—and it paid off. Not because my gut was smarter, but because I did a thorough inspection. The data was right about risk; my gut was right about opportunity.
Practical Checklist Before You Buy
If you’re serious about a used Boss LS1420, run through this:
- Ask for the tube hour log. If they don’t have one, assume 1,500+ hours.
- Check the rails with your finger. If you feel pitting, budget for replacement.
- Run a test cut on 3mm plywood at 80% power. Uneven cuts mean bed warping.
- Verify the software version. Anything before X5-2023 may need an update.
- Confirm the warranty transfer status. Boss Laser sometimes honors used transfers.
The Honest Limitations
Not everyone should buy a used LS1420. If your business depends on zero downtime, or you’re cutting materials above 20mm thickness regularly, maybe go new. Also, this machine is not for large-format work—the 24” x 14” bed won’t fit a full sheet of plywood. And if you’re planning to use it for production runs over 500 pieces a week, the focus depth on CO2 at this size edge can drift enough that you’ll need constant re-checking.
But for a shop that needs a reliable cutter for acrylic, wood, and thin metals—and wants to get it fast—a used Boss LS1420 is a really smart bet.
