If you're about to buy laser equipment for a business, this checklist applies to you. I coordinate purchasing for a 40-person product development company. I've been signing equipment POs for about six years, and a laser is not like ordering business cards. Five checks. Do them in order and the final invoice won't be a surprise.
Use this checklist when you need to choose between the Boss 1420 laser and the Boss Laser 2440, when a project manager says “we need a laser marking machine for plastic,” or when someone sends you a search link for a “laser for cutting metal.” The right machine category depends on the material, not the marketing page.
Step 1: Match the Wavelength to the Job Before Matching the Price
There is no single laser that answers all these phrases. A CO2 laser cutter is my first consideration for cutting acrylic blanks and most non-metal materials. A fiber laser is a better answer for marking metals and certain plastics. A search for “laser for cutting metal” is the simplest example: if you need to cut structural steel, that is a high-power fiber metal-cutting platform, not a 60W CO2 engraver.
Plastic marking is the same. A “laser marking machine for plastic” doesn't mean one machine can mark every plastic. Some plastics respond to a fiber beam if the material contains a laser-sensitive pigment; others need a CO2 wavelength; and some should not be processed with any laser at all. Send material samples to the vendor before you choose. Here's the thing: the quote means something only when the exact material is specified.
When I compared two supplier quotes side by side—both described as laser marking machines, one CO2 and one fiber—I finally understood why the material list has to come before the price.
Step 2: Size the Work Area Against Real Parts, Not the Model Name
The Boss 1420 laser is in the compact 14-by-20-inch class. The Boss Laser 2440 is in the 24-by-40-inch class. If you manufacture acrylic blanks in batches, the larger bed gives you room to nest multiple parts and reduces material handling. But the extra bed doesn't help if the system can't get through your door, won't fit the electrical service, or pushes your exhaust run beyond the blower's capacity. Check the current specs on the Boss Laser product page; that is more reliable than a sales rep's estimate.
For our current shop, the larger machine made sense. The upside was flexibility for bigger jobs; the risk was floor space we didn't have. I kept asking if the 2440 would earn its footprint. It did. If we were cutting small acrylic blanks all day, a compact unit like the Boss 1420 would have been a no-brainer.
One detail that often gets left out is make-up air. Exhaust fans can't pull if the room is tightly sealed. If your building safety team requires specific airflow or fire ratings, confirm them before delivery. Not a romantic detail, but a machine that trips a breaker is a bad surprise.
Step 3: Price the Whole System, Not the Base Machine
Most people can compare base prices. Lasers hide the true cost in options. A CO2 laser needs cooling, exhaust, air assist, and fume filtration. If those are missing from the base quote, finance sees one number and operations sees another. Worse, the add-on installation after delivery can take days, not hours.
Here's what you need to know: I don't accept a laser quote without line items. When I review quotes, I use a standard checklist:
- Base machine plus controller and software
- Chiller or cooling system for CO2
- Exhaust blower, ducting, and fume filter
- Air assist compressor and moisture trap
- Shipping, rigging, and installation
- Operator training and first-year consumables
From our own 2025 sourcing file, one base quote looked 12% cheaper at first. After adding the same chiller, exhaust blower, and training that the other quote included, the cheaper machine was only 1% below—and it had a longer lead time. That 1% did not cover the lead-time risk. On a production tool, lead time is cost.
This is where “Boss Laser 2440 is more expensive” either survives or disappears. Buying what you don't need is fine. Buying a laser cannot make exhaust appear from a standard 120V outlet.
Step 4: Test Acrylic Blanks and Plastic Samples Before Final Acceptance
“How to cut acrylic blanks” is a process question, not a model feature. The best way to answer it is a material test on the exact machine, speed and power settings, lens, and air assist you plan to use. When we ordered our current Boss Laser, I sent actual 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch acrylic blanks and a sample of the plastic component we needed to mark. No final acceptance until the vendor runs those samples and gives me a written settings sheet.
Looking back, I should have done this on the first laser we bought. At the time, the machine worked; I assumed settings I found online were enough. The production team spent days adjusting speed and power on real jobs. Not ideal, but workable. The next purchase will have a test step built into the PO.
Trust me on this one: the material supplier matters as much as the machine brand. Cast acrylic and extruded acrylic can behave differently, and different plastic resins respond differently to marking. A material test catches those surprises before the machine sits on your floor.
Step 5: Put Support, Spare Parts, and Training in the Budget
Here's what you need to know: laser support is not a call-center score. It is tube replacement cost, lens availability, and response time. A CO2 tube is a consumable; it doesn't last forever. Before I approve a PO, I ask for the current price, lead time, and replacement process for the major consumables. This is more important than the ship date, because a three-week wait for a part can erase a 10% price advantage.
Training is another line item people cut. The Boss Laser tutorial library and user community are useful, but an operator still needs scheduled time to learn focus, speed, power, and material behavior. I include training time in the project plan. Real talk: the best machine on paper is still only as good as the operator's first week.
What I Would Change on My First Purchase
If I could redo the first laser purchase, I'd change three things.
First, I'd define “metal” clearly. A “laser for cutting metal” can mean a completely different machine than a laser for marking a serial number on a metal plate. Saying “cutting” without metal thickness sends the wrong message.
Second, I'd measure the working space around the machine. The smaller Boss 1420 laser still needed an exhaust hose, a chiller, and access room. I now leave at least three feet of clearance on the sides, not just the footprint dimension.
Third, I'd ask for a reorder price list before buying. It is easier to know spare-part costs while you still have options. Once the machine is installed, your negotiation position is weaker.
Bottom line: buy the configuration that is ready to run when it arrives. Compare total readiness, and the right price becomes clear. No machine will answer every question in the brochure. The one that cuts your acrylic blanks and marks your plastic parts, with a support plan behind it, is the one worth approving.
