We Bought a BOSS Laser During Black Friday—After Almost Choosing a $1,795 Wood Laser Engraver

It started with a forwarded quote, not a grand strategy.

At 3:47 on a Friday afternoon—I remember the time because I was actually planning to leave early, which almost never happens—our operations manager emailed me a PDF. Not a Slack message. An email with the word Approval in the subject line. The PDF was a $2,340 estimate from an outside engraving shop for 40 walnut plaques and 12 steel nameplates.

Her note had one sentence: “Can we please just buy the machine already?”

I’m the office administrator for a custom branded-merchandise company. We have about 30 people, and I manage purchasing across most departments.
